September 2005 Mentor of the Month: Jack Maggiore
Jack A. Maggiore, PhD, MT(ASCP)

Dr. Maggiore received his Bachelor of Science degree with Highest Honors in Medical Laboratory Sciences in 1986, and his Masters of Science degree in Clinical Chemistry in 1991 from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Health Sciences Center. Dr. Maggiore received his doctorate degree in Pathology from UIC in 1999. Much of his research at UIC focused on the role of homocysteine in the prevention and pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. Dr. Maggiore is a medical technologist, and is board-certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Concurrent to his pursuit for advanced degrees, Dr. Maggiore began his laboratory career at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center in 1986, and served the Hospital Laboratory as a Medical Technologist, Supervisor, and Manager for 13 years. Dr. Maggiore concurrently held an academic faculty position at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he lectured to medical technology students and medical residents on several topics in pathology and laboratory medicine. Dr. Maggiore joined BIOSAFE Medical Technologies in 1999, and has served as Administrative Laboratory Director, Director of Clinical Trials, Head of Research and Development, Chief Scientific Officer, and since 2003 as President of BIOSAFE Laboratories.

Dr. Maggiore is active in the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, where he currently serves on the Editorial Board for Clinical Laboratory News and served on the Chicago Section Executive Committee from 1993 to 2001, as Corresponding Secretary and Chair. The Chicago section has awarded Dr. Maggiore with two awards: the Lemuel J. Bowie Award for Young Investigators, and the Albert A. Dietz Award for Service. He is the author of several peer reviewed and invited publications and textbook chapters, and has presented his research findings at international scientific society meetings.

Dr. Maggiore, his wife, Eileen, and their five children reside in Lombard, Illinois, where Dr. Maggiore has served on his elementary school board, and is active with his parish youth ministries and park district.
