We use microntainers on capillary puncture (most on newborns) but after reading the references on blood collection related anemia, we made some changes. We have a bloodless medicine program for the Jehovah Witness population. Keeping all staff (including RNs) drawing peds draw tubes was hard to maintain. So we changed to doing a full size tube and the full rainbow of tubes only on day one of the admission or ER visit. All other draws are Peds size tubes and no extra tubes. As a side effect, we are spending less on tubes, labels and draws are faster. We have seen few redraws for add-on tests since most add-on's are on day one. We've been doing this for three months, but have yet done a comparative study on discharge Hgb's. Lee P.
