The HPLC assay can identify A1c separately from other hemoglobins such as S or C that can also be glycated at position 6. Remember that some (if not many) immunoassays can measure S1c and C1C as A1c. If the RBC lifespan is normal, S1c and C1c should be as informative as A1c assuming that the rates of glycation of hemoglobins S and C are equal to the rate of glycation of hemoglobin A0 to A1c.
