Gerald Cooper MD, PhD (1914-2009)
It is with heartfelt grief that members of the Southeast Section mourn the loss of our beloved Gerald Cooper. Gerald was a stabilizing influence within our section and the AACC. Somehow, things will never be the same for many of us. He was our colleague, our mentor, our role model and a true consummate southern gentleman. Dr. Cooper worked for more than 50 years at the CDC, where his contributions to the Cholesterol Standardization Program and lipids, lipoproteins and coronary heart disease are legendary. Without this program, cholesterol monitoring would not be what it is today. Dr. Cooper obtained his A.B., M.A., Ph.D., and M.D. degrees from Duke University. His accomplishments are well documented. A true icon in clinical chemistry, I fondly remember the human side of Gerald. He was never too busy or too much of a celebrity to speak with anyone. He instantly was your friend and never forgot you.
Prior to his death, the Southeast Section AACC established a travel award in honor of Gerald. It will be called the Dr. Gerald Cooper Travel Award. It is intended to help postdoctoral or graduate students interested in clinical chemistry attend local and regional professional meetings. The Awards Committee will be establishing criteria for this award and plan to begin bestowing it in 2010. Donations on behalf of Dr. Cooper can be made to the Southeast Section and will be used for the Travel Award. Send donations for this award to (please note the purpose of the donation):

Through this award we will forever honor the legacy of Gerald Cooper. I know he would be smiling to know that he has helped to mentor future clinical chemists.
