University of Nebraska Medical Center
Omaha, NE 68198-5150

Mary Haven is currently Emeritus Associate Dean of the School of Allied Health Professions at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Emeritus Professor in Pathology and Microbiology and Clinical Laboratory Science. She was a Clinical Chemist in the Pathology/Microbiology Department for 38 years. For 28 of those years her main focus was on evaluations of automated immunoassay methods and assay methods for therapeutic monitoring of immunosuppressants. During that time she was also involved in the teaching of clinical laboratory science students, allied health students and residents. While Associate Dean for 11 years, she oversaw ten allied health programs, including clinical laboratory science.

Mary's major interests include the development of core courses for allied health students, courses on management, changes in the health care environment, and research methodologies. She has adapted these courses to the Internet to improve access to educational programs in Nebraska and throughout the region and continues to teach via distance. She has been the principal investigator for distance education grants, and for three outreach programs to the rural Native American communities in Nebraska. The outreach projects involved a partnership with tribal diabetes programs in the communities and worked with the resources in those communities to prevent and manage diabetes, a disease which affects the tribes at a rate 10x greater than the majority population of Nebraska.

Mary has been an active AACC member. She was the Workshop Chair and member of the Organizing Committee for the 50th anniversary meeting of AACC in 1998. As a member of the House of Delegates, she served on the Long Range Planning Committee and was chair of that committee for two years. As a member of the Midwest Section, she served as Chair, Program Chair, secretary, and delegate. Mary is a member of the Management Sciences Division and has served as its treasurer and chair. She is the lead faculty for the division sponsored online certificate program in Clinical Laboratory Leadership and Management that is being launched at this year’s Annual meeting.
