Mario Plebani, MD
The Management Sciences Division (MSD) of AACC is pleased to announce that the 2007 recipient of the Division’s Award for “Outstanding Contributions to Management Sciences” is Dr. Mario Plebani.
Dr. Mario Plebani is Full Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology at the Medical School of the University of Padova, Italy, and Chief of the Department of Laboratory Medicine in the University-Hospital of Padova. He is also the Chief of the Centre of Biomedical Research of Castelfranco Veneto, a specialized centre for quality in Laboratory Medicine of the Veneto Region. Currently, he is President of the International Society for Enzymology (2004-2008) and of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology (SIBioC).
A native of Schio (Vicenza, Italy), Dr. Plebani obtained his medical degree, summa cum laude, from the Medical School of the University of Padova in 1975. He completed residency training and specialization in Laboratory Medicine (1978) and Gastroenterology (1983) at the same University. He began his carrier at the University-Hospital of Padova in 1977, served as laboratory professional at the Hospital of Verona from 1981 to 1985. In 1991, he was appointed Head of the Clinical Laboratory of the University-Hospital in Padova and, in 2001, Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the same University-Hospital.
Dr. Plebani’s interest in quality began in late 90s when he introduced in Italy the accreditation of clinical laboratories according to the Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA,UK) standards and later according to the ISO 9000 rules. The clinical laboratory in which Dr. Plebani is working was the first laboratory outside the UK to receive full accreditation in 1995.
He currently is serving on the ISO Technical Committee 212 WG 1 that is revising the document ISO 15189:2003 and was involved with the preparation of ISO/PDTS 22367 “Medical laboratories: reduction of error through risk management and continual improvement. Complementary element.” He is also serving in the AACC group on patient safety as well as in the EC4 group of accreditation and ISO/CEN standards.
Dr. Plebani’s research has focused on different areas of laboratory medicine and particularly in the fields of markers of gastroenterological diseases, and neoplastic diseases. He has published 514 peer-reviewed papers, 20 papers in Proceedings of scientific conferences, 25 chapters, monographs, books and reports. He has also published 410 abstracts and made over 250 presentations at scientific meetings, conferences, workshops and seminars. He also serves as Review Editor of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Associate Editor of Clinical Biochemistry, CRC Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the International Journal of Biological Markers, and Member of the Editorial Board of Clinica Chimica Acta and Clinical Proteomics.
