Ian Wilkinson, PhD
The recipient of the 2003 Outstanding Contributions to Management Sciences Award presented by the Management Sciences Division is Ian Wilkinson, Ph.D. The announcement was made at the Division meeting July 19, 2003 in Philadelphia, prior to the Leadership Seminar. Dr. Wilkinson was unable to attend the meeting due to commitments in his current position as Special Consultant to Manitoba Health in Winnipeg Canada. The award and accompanying honorarium were presented in absentia and later delivered to him. Dr. Wilkinson has published and presented extensively on various management-related topics. He authored the first book in the AACC Hitchhiker’s Guide series, the highly successful “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Clinical Chemistry” which is now in its fourth edition. He has also authored five other books with management themes. Dr. Wilkinson has been a regular contributor to the Management Sciences Division newsletter and has presented highly successful management workshops at the AACC Annual Meeting and to other professional organizations. He has served in several positions on the executive committee of the Division including serving as Chair of the Division from 2001 to 2002.
Dr. Wilkinson received his PhD in Immunology from the University of Manitoba in 1986 and following post-doctoral training in clinical biochemistry worked as a Clinical Biochemist at the University of Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Science Centre from 1990 to 1993. Since 1993 he has held several positions within Manitoba Health. In 1993 he earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Toronto and has incorporated this knowledge and experience into his management courses, presentations and publications. Dr. Wilkinson is recognized as an accomplished and entertaining speaker and has received the AACC Outstanding Speaker Award and the William D. Peek Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He has been active in organizing and presenting several management courses/presentations including The AACC Management Review Course in 1997 that was the highest rated AACC continuing education course up to that time. He has numerous international presentations and has been very active in the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). In addition to his scientific and management related presentations and publications Dr. Wilkinson has written and published more than 40 articles with either humorous or medical history themes.
