Lab Tests Online Wins Communicator Award of Distinction

Washington, DC, June 24, 2008 - Lab Tests Online was among the organizations honored in the 2008 Communicators Awards, announced by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA).  With over 9,000 U.S. and international entries, the Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring the creative excellence for communications professionals.  Entered in the Interactive category, Lab Tests Online was recognized with the Award of Distinction for the site’s writing.

The Communicator Awards are judged and overseen by IAVA, a 200+ member organization of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media.  Current IAVA membership represents a "Who's Who" of acclaimed media, advertising, and marketing firms including  Condè Nast, Coach, Disney, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Estee Lauder, Fry Hammond Barr, HBO, Monster.com, MTV, Polo Ralph Lauren, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Victoria’s  Secret, Wired, Yahoo!, and many others.  See International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA) web site  for more information.

Lab Tests Online is a non-commercial, peer-reviewed patient resource on medical laboratory testing developed by the laboratory community and produced by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.  “This is a tremendous honor for the entire Editorial Board, writers, and staff of Lab Tests Online. It just goes to show that even some of the most difficult scientific and medical concepts can be communicated effectively,” said D. Robert Dufour, MD, a lead editor for the website. He added, “And it also proves that yes, some of us in the sciences do know how to write.”

“The incredible quality and diversity of this year’s entries was an inspiration to the academy and all of our judges.  The work reflected the rapidly changing media landscape as the growing amounts of interactive work submitted pushed the limits of the medium, and the quality of the traditional work submitted was again remarkable,” noted Linda Day, director of the IAVA.

Lab Tests Online launched in 2001 with the support of five laboratory professional societies.  Today, the site is supported by 19 laboratory organizations.  Each of these collaborating partners provides a member volunteer to serve on the website’s Editorial Review Board.  A complete list of the current and former members of the Board can be found here.  Lab Tests Online has spawned localized versions in Australia, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom with others in development.  Details of Lab Tests Online’s Collaborating Partners – those laboratory organizations that have collaborated on the editorial development of the site – can be found here.
