Challenges of Interfacing the LIS to the Electronic Health Record

Originally presented as the Laboratory Information Systems and Medical Informatics Division Symposium on July 18, 2009 at the AACC Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL.

The Program

President Barack Obama wants the federal government to invest in electronic health records so all medical records are digitized within five years.  This will involve an investment of 10 Billion dollars a year for a five year period.  However, hospitals have a long road ahead to adoption of electronic health records.  This session will explore the laboratory’s role in EHR functions including order entry, results management, data capture of electronic health information, training laboratory professionals in IT functions, and administrative processes.
