Conference Information
The field of point of care testing is in a period of considerable growth and change. Not unexpectedly, this is producing both challenges and opportunities for clinicians, laboratorians, and the manufacturers of POC tests. At stake is the promise of improved patient care through earlier detection and diagnosis of disease, improved monitoring of symptoms, and more personalized and appropriate treatment. The innovations, controversies, and partnerships that are driving these changes are the focus of this 23rd international symposium being sponsored by AACC’s Critical and Point-of-Care Testing Division.
The field is being challenged to build evidence of clinical effectiveness, improve the accuracy of point-of-care devices, and educate users on appropriate operation and interpretation of POC tests. Two areas in which these issues are particularly poignant and which will be the topic of point/counterpoint discussions during the meeting are tight glycemic control and resistance to antiplatelet therapy. Also covered will be emerging POC tests for microbiology and infectious disease. New at this meeting will be a session of case studies describing successful partnerships between the manufacturers of the POC devices and healthcare providers, highlighting the role of the point-of-care coordinator in making successful partnerships work.
This 2 ½ day meeting includes posters and presentations by clinicians and scientists who are on the emerging edge of changes in the point-of-care field. The following scientific areas are covered:
- Integrating POCT into Patient Care Pathways and Patient Outcomes
- Microbiology and Infectious Disease Testing
- Innovation and New Technologies
- Point-of-Care Partnerships
- Controversies in POC and Critical Care Testing
Who Should Attend
This program is appropriate for laboratory directors, clinical scientists, point-of-care coordinators, medical technologists, nurses, regulatory personnel, and industry representatives and researchers.
Learning Objectives
This intermediate level conference will prepare attendees to:
- Articulate approaches to integrating point- of-care testing into patient care pathways to achieve better outcomes.
- Outline the current role of infectious disease point-of-care testing in population screening, patient care, and under-resourced settings.
- Educate colleagues about new and emerging technologies in critical and point of care testing.
- Design strategies for utilization of partnerships in providing high quality, effective point of care testing.
- Articulate the controversies surrounding the use of point-of-care testing to monitor Plavix therapy and in tight glycemic control regimens.
