Anthony W. Butch, Ph.D.

Anthony W. Butch, Ph.D., DABCC, FACB, MT (ASCP), is the Director of Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology and the Support Services section of the Clinical Laboratory at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center. He is also director of the Clinical Immunology Research Laboratory and a Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Butch received a B.S. in Medical Technology from Michigan State University, a Ph.D. in Immunology from Wayne State University, and completed post-doctoral training in clinical chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis. He then joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1993 as Assistant Professor of Pathology, Director of Clinical Chemistry & Immunology, and Associate Director of Clinical Laboratories at the University Hospital. In 1999 he was recruited to UCLA. Dr. Butch is a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry and a fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. Dr. Butch has been an active member of AACC since 1989 and has served as ACCENT Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer, House Representative, Program Chair, and Chair of the Southern California Section of AACC. At the national level he has served on the AACC Nominating Committee, the Divisions Management Group, and as a member of the ABCC Board of Directors. He has chaired or participated in several AACC sponsored educational activities at the annual meetings including edutraks, workshops and roundtables. In addition to clinical service, Dr. Butch is committed to research and education. His research interests focus on the characterization of assays to evaluate immunological function and the development of novel protein immunoassays. His educational activities include lectures to medical students, fellows, residents, graduate students, and medical technology students on topics relating to chemistry, toxicology and immunology. He has published more than 90 papers, abstracts and book chapters, serves on two editorial boards, and is an Ad-Hoc reviewer for 11 journals, including Clinical Chemistry.
