This presentation is intended to provide the audience with a basic understanding of the science of pharmacogenomics (PGx). The focus of the talk will be on the applied or clinical aspects of this emerging field, including several case studies demonstrating the use of PGx during clinical trials and drug development. The future clinical diagnostic uses and the relative importance to health care will be highlighted.

Objectives:
1. Know how pharmacogenomics impacts patient response to pharmaceutical drugs.

2. Understand how pharmacogenomics is being utilized to develop safer and more effective medicines.

3. Realize how pharmacogenomics will benefit health care in general and specifically physicians and their patients once it becomes integrated into the practice of medicine.

4. Appreciate the unique considerations of pharmacogenomics and genetic testing that are not encountered in the typical clinical diagnostic testing arena.
