The Impact of Hyperglycemia and Intravenous Insulin on Cardiac Surgery Outcomes

November 1, 2004

Anthony P. Furnary, MD

Tight glycemic control (TGC) protocols tightly manage the glucose levels of hospital in-patients. Peer-reviewed research demonstrates dramatic improvements in patient outcomes when TGC protocols have been implemented. TGC protocols have been implemented for patients in ICU in cardiothoracic patients, among others. Once used only in the ICU, TGC is now benefiting patients in other medical care environments.

Anthony Furnary, MD, FACS, FACC, Associate Director of the Albert Starr Academic Center at St. Vincent Hospital & Medical Center (Portland, Ore.), is considered by many to be the “father of tight glycemic control.” Among his findings is that the peri- and post-operative glycemic control in patients undergoing open-heart procedures markedly reduces mortality, co-morbidities and associated costs.

Studies conducted by other world-renowned institutions, published in several peer-reviewed journals, further validate Dr. Furnary’s findings

This AACC session specifically allows laboratory professionals the opportunity to examine the Portland Protocol results and query Dr. Furnary on the lab’s role in applying this algorithm.

Join us as Dr. Furnary addresses your questions and discusses:

* Results of the Portland Diabetic Project

* Biochemical mechanisms of action related to clinical outcomes

* TGC implementation strategies for your hospital
