19th Annual Management Sciences and Patient Safety Leadership Seminar:
Using Automation to Achieve Six-Sigma Quality and Improve Patient Safety

This talk describes how Dr. Hawker's laboratory has used automation and advanced software to reduce lost specimens 100-fold and become the first Six-Sigma laboratory in the US. It will also describe his development of an automated camera system that uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to identify possible mislabeled specimens, possibly leading that metric to also reach Six-Sigma quality levels.

Nutrition Division Networking Symposium, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease - A Silent Foe

The session will review the pathophysiology, the epidemiology of NAFLD, and explore the present and upcoming biomarkers. It will also provide an overview of recent findings addressing the role of nutrition in the NAFLD development and progression, and discuss the role of gut microbiota in its pathogenesis.
