Amyloidosis is a disorder in which abnormal proteins build up in tissues and organs. Clumps of the abnormal proteins, called amyloid deposits, can build up in certain organs, reducing their ability to work correctly. Definitive diagnosis is made by a biopsy examination for evidence of characteristic amyloid deposits, but treatment strategies are often determined by the additional information gained by protein subtyping.
