POINT-OF-CARE SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

COURSE INFORMATION

One of the cornerstones of consistent, accurate, high quality laboratory testing is the prerequisite of appropriate training for all personnel.  The course addresses healthcare regulations for education, training, and competency that affect point-of-care testing.  It outlines characteristics that influence learning and explains principles of effective training.  It review teaching methods and techniques and provides guidelines for a systematic program of competency assessment.

  • Designing training programs to accommodate individual differences
  • Educational tools
  • CLSI model for training and competency assessment
  • Regulations regarding education, training, and competency
  • Measuring educational outcomes

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The learner will be able to:

  • Apply 6 universal principles of effective training to POCT education activities
  • Select appropriate educational techniques and methods for the training environment
  • Apply guidelines developed by CLSI for effective training and competency assessment
  • Identify requirements for competency assessment specified by CLIA, the Joint Commission, and CAP
