Peter A. Kavsak, PhD

Dr. Kavsak is an associate professor in the department of pathology and molecular medicine at McMaster University, a clinical biochemist at the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program, and a scientist at the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute, Hamilton Health Sciences in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Kavsak has made significant contributions in the area of cardiovascular biomarkers, in particular cardiac troponin. He has received more than 25 grants as either the principal investigator or co-investigator from various public agencies, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the National Cancer Institute. His publications were among the first to demonstrate the use of low cardiac troponin concentrations to identify patients at long-term risk for cardiovascular events and the use of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays. He has published more than 150 items in peer-reviewed journals and delivered more than 40 invited presentations. He is editor-in-chief of Clinical Biochemistry. He has served the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) on the annual meeting organizing committee, as an officer in the Biomarkers of Acute Cardiovascular Diseases Division, and as a speaker at several meetings of the upstate New York section. He served as head of professional affairs for the Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists for five years.
