Overview of Social Media Sites

There are many similarities between these three social media sites. Dozens of sites exist, but we’ve chosen to mention these three because of their popularity. Social media may be more valuable for the information you receive and not necessarily the information you generate. You may find that it takes awhile to get used to using the sites and figuring out how you want to use them.

Twitter

Twitter is a free microblog that allows users to publish messages of 140 characters or fewer. Twitter is a great way to establish followers (ie, readers) and draw their attention to your blog, web site and event page. The basic premise is to share things that are interesting to you and to see highlights about things that are meaningful to you. To follow (aka receive updates from) AACC, search for _AACC.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a professional networking site. It provides you with the opportunity to share your educational and professional experience, maintain the essential business contacts that you’ve established over the years, meet new contacts through the people you already know, and network. You don’t have to worry about keeping track of contact information for colleagues anymore. As their employment changes, they’ll update their profiles, and by having them in your network you’ll be able to stay in touch. In addition to maintaining your contacts, LinkedIn has many useful applications such as document sharing, discussion boards, and polls. To join the AACC group, search for AACC under groups.
